Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle

Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin is a regulated Interprofessional Care Team providing traditional healing, primary care, mental health and health promotion services to Indigenous community members in the North Simcoe Muskoka region. It is under the umbrella of the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle and works in partnership with the Aboriginal Health Circle.



Position:  Nurse Practitioners (3)

Region:  Barrie & Area, Orillia & Area

Description:  

 

Working in an Indigenous inter-professional regulated primary health care team environment, the Nurse Practitioner will provide culturally safe primary health care to full scope, with a strong emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. The Nurse Practitioner will assess, diagnose, treat and monitor a wide range of health problems using an evidence-based approach to their practice, while engaging patients as full partners in their care plan with attention to self-care to the extent that patients are willing and able to participate. Note: Given the traditional practices of Indigenous People, from time to time exposure to the burning of sacred medicines: tobacco, sweetgrass, cedar or sage may occur within the work setting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

All employees of BANAC are required to submit a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening upon hire and confirm compliance every year thereafter; comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations and all occupational health and safety policies and procedures; and to work some evenings and flexible hours. Due to the requirements of this position, a Valid Ontario driver’s license and use of own vehicle is requiredValid CPR and AED certificate required.

Qualifications

Member in good standing and without restrictions, College of Nurses of Ontario <

  • Member in good standing of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario or the Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario 
  • A current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class;
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a recognized University and Certificate as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various computer applications and software related to healthcare programs.
  • Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the core values of compassion, respect, accountability, excellence and safety.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Program;

 

Skills

  • Experience working as an NP in a primary health care or community setting an asset
  • Experience working within an EMR and an electronic office work environment 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and protocols
  • Understanding and knowledge of a trauma-informed approach to health-care
  • Familiarity with use of OTN – assisting patients with referrals to specialists, traditional healers, and allied health professionals 
  • Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task without supervision
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with regulated health professionals and maintain a positive team environment
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites, and a willingness to outreach and engage with Indigenous communities

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is typically performed in clinic, office and community settings.
  • Regular travel to meetings and communities, possible
  • Regular overtime work may be required from time to time.
  • Low to moderate exposure to noise in the work environment.
  • Regular exposure to a moderate level of tension and anxiety due to deadlines, competing political pressures, and the competing needs and demands for limited resources. 
  • Periodic exposure to smoke may occur from the burning of sacred medicines: tobacco, sweet grass, sage or cedar.

 

E. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

Specific employment conditions of the Nurse Practitioner are specified in an employment contract with the Executive Director and include the following:

  • Worksite location at either Barrie or Orillia or Beausoleil First Nation. 
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license is required. 
  • Clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector

 



Salary:  100,000. – 108,000. & Benefit Package (including H

Terms of Employment:  FT - Permanent
