It's ours! RVH gets keys to Expansion
April 16, 2012. Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s Phase 1 Expansion Project has achieved the most significant milestone to-date – on April 16, the building was officially ‘turned over’ to RVH allowing for a phased-in opening of the 400,000 square foot facility.
“This is a day that everyone at RVH, and the communities we serve, has been anxiously waiting for,” says Janice Skot, RVH President and CEO. “Now that the building is truly ours, we can begin our carefully planned phased-in occupancy of the building and later this spring, will start to see patients in the new facility.”
Construction on the Phase 1 Expansion Project began in March 2009. The $450 million project, constructed by Carillion Canada Inc., is one of the largest capital infrastructure projects in the history of the region. It will add capacity for 165 inpatient beds, significantly expand the Emergency, Imaging Department and Laboratory, see the development of a seven-bed coronary care unit, two new high-tech operating suites and the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.
“Thanks to the support of people from throughout the community, what started as a dream is now a reality,” says Jon Babulic, Chair, RVH Board of Directors. “The provincial government recognized the need for enhanced access to care, and people and organizations from every corner of the region rallied their support.”
RVH will now begin preparations for occupancy of the new facility, including delivery and installation of equipment and furniture as well as training and orientation for staff, physicians and volunteers. This process is expected to take approximately two months and then a 32-bed new Respiratory Unit will open as well as the Emergency Department. Following that, Imaging will begin to move in to their new location in the expansion, followed by the opening of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre in early summer.
An open house for the public is planned for May 17, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
