Service Description: For individuals unable to complete their income tax and benefit return themselves and are unable to pay for assistance, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) may be able to assist. Volunteers can help complete the income tax and benefit return if income is low and tax situation is simple.

Volunteers do not complete income tax and benefit returns for deceased persons, bankrupt individuals, or individuals who have capital gains or losses, employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses.

Application: By appointment only during tax season Mar-Apr

For an appointment, individuals first register, either online at , by phone, or visit library and ask staff at the desk to register them online. Client will be contacted by a volunteer to arrange a time and given appointment details.

Bring tax slips and forms to appointment * also bring completed Client Information Application Form which provides participant's personal information * form can be picked up at front desk during regular library hours
Eligibility / Target Population: These suggested maximum income levels should serve as a guideline only.

Single Up to $30,000
Couple Up to $40,000
One adult with child Up to $35,000 * $2500 for additional dependent

Local community organizations have the flexibility to adjust or set additional eligibility criteria for taxpayers based on the local economic environment, the population they serve, and their own capacity.

Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:

* returns for deceased persons;
* individuals who file for bankruptcy;
* self-employed individuals;
* individuals who report capital gains or losses; or
* individuals who report employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses.

Eligible taxpayers normally served by the CVITP include:

* Low-income individuals and social assistance recipients;
* Newcomers to Canada;
* Seniors; and
* Students
