Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare Installs New Board Chair

(Tuesday, June 19, 2012, Muskoka, ON) – Larry Saunders has been appointed Chair of the Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) Board of Directors following the corporation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Huntsville Monday evening.

Saunders, a resident of Huntsville, assumes the role of Chair for a two-year term, replacing former chair Sven Miglin who will continue to serve his second three-year term as a Director. Saunders joined the MAHC Board in June 2008 and has held executive positions including Treasurer and Vice-Chair. A retired banker, Saunders has also chaired the Governance, Resources and Quality & Patient Safety committees during his tenure with the Board.

“I’m honoured to assume the Board Chair role for Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare,” said Saunders. “Sven has provided excellent leadership during his term and I thank him for his dedication to the role he has served with great distinction for the communities of Muskoka and East Parry Sound. I look forward to working with my fellow board members, our committed staff and physicians, and our communities to ensure that MAHC delivers on its mission, vision and values.”

During the AGM, the members of the corporation elected Joe Swiniarski as a new Director and returned Directors Evelyn Brown, Bill Garriock and Eric Spinks to a second term. Swiniarski resides in Novar and brings a wealth of experience to the Board from his background in IT management consulting, accounting, and project management. In addition, the Board appointed Charlie Forret as Vice-Chair and Phil Matthews as Treasurer; the remaining board complement includes Catherine King, Gregg Evans, John Sinclair and Rick Durst.

“We are very fortunate to have a group of highly qualified and skilled professionals on our Board,” said Natalie Bubela, Chief Executive Officer for MAHC. “As governors of the hospital, the volunteer board members monitor the hospital’s quality, performance standards and financial accountability, and work to ensure we deliver best patient outcomes with high standards and compassion.”

The Board also recognized and thanked departing Director Wayne Twaits for his contribution to health care in our communities. Other business conducted at the AGM included the audited financial statements for the year ending March 31, 2012, the appointment of the Corporate Auditors for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, and the presentation of the annual Board Award of Excellence to four recipients.

The Board Award of Excellence Program is designed to promote, reward and recognize employee and physician achievements that demonstrate the values of Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare. The 2012 Board Award of Excellence recipients include Kristen Bell, Dr. David Johnstone, Frankie Dewsbury, and Christine Loshaw.

“The Board Award of Excellence is a great opportunity for the Board to recognize and honour the outstanding performance and achievements of staff and physicians within our organization that contribute to the successes of MAHC every day,” said outgoing chair Sven Miglin. “We appreciate the opportunity to share our successes with our communities during our Annual General Meeting.”
